Customs & Baggage Rules & Regulations

Knowing what to pack and what to leave behind is the secret to a fast exit from the airport. The information below ensures you stay on the right side of the law and have a wonderful holiday.

The below was updated during February 2026. Always check the rules and regulations, as they might change without prior notice and may not be updated on this website.

  • Tobacco Products: As of early 2026, there is a strict ban on tourists bringing cigarettes into Sri Lanka. Any tobacco products found in luggage will be confiscated, and you may face heavy fines. Buy your cigarettes locally if needed.

  • Narcotics & Psychotropic Substances: Extremely strict penalties, including life imprisonment.

  • Pornographic or Seditious Material: This includes any literature or media deemed offensive to local religious beliefs.

  • Anti-Religious Motifs: Items that ridicule or show disrespect to any religion (particularly Buddhism) are prohibited.

  • Spirits & Wine: Up to 1.5 litres of spirits and 2 bottles of wine.

  • Perfume: Up to 250ml of Eau de Toilette and a small quantity of perfume.

  • Souvenirs/Gifts: Items with a total value of up to $250 USD (non-commercial use).

  • Currency: You can bring in any amount of foreign currency, but you must declare it if the total value exceeds $15,000 USD.

Note: If you plan to take back more than $5,000 USD in cash when you leave, declare the full amount upon arrival.

  • Medication: Bring only what you need for personal use. Keep them in original packaging and carry a copy of your Doctor’s Prescription.

  • Drones: Must be registered with the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) before you fly them. Do not fly near "High Security Zones" (government or military buildings).

  • Professional Equipment: High-end filming equipment or telecommunication gear may require a temporary import permit.

  • Plants & Animals: Requires prior approval from the Department of Agriculture/Quarantine.

  • Buddha Tattoos/Clothing: Sri Lanka is deeply respectful of Buddhist imagery. If you have a tattoo of the Buddha, it is highly recommended to keep it covered with clothing while in public and at the airport to avoid being denied entry or detained.
